"PLATASIA OIL Co.", Adrián Balseca
Janela
September 2021

PT

EN

Adrián Balseca presents us today at Janela an extension of his PLANTASIA OIL Co. project, adapted to this new context.

PLANTASIA OIL Co. suggests a return to the primordial garden, but not as we imagine it – idyllic, paradisiacal, dehumanized. This garden is the garden of the new natural, where plants live in harmony with the offspring of capitalism and the remains of human life, such as scrap metal and fossil fuel cans. Like wild herbs that do not attain the status of “plants” because no marketable product can be extracted from them, these empty oil, paint or cement cans, at the end of their lives, are released into nature. So, like horses at the end of their careers, they can finally live the retirement they deserve.

The new Garden is the meeting point for everything that no longer serves capitalism. In the case of the Amazon rainforest, which PLANTASIA OIL Co. is commenting on, this notion of a denaturalized garden is reinforced by the deforestation, contamination and irresponsible and intensive agriculture of products that are cultivated to feed a system that ends up castrating the land. Lubricants, solvents and pesticides are among the modernist agents of the denaturalization of the Amazon rainforest and many others. What we are left with is this new Eden which, exhausted, insists on keeping on doing what Nature does best - transform, adapt and survive. Adrián Balseca brings to Janela traces of this Garden, such as obsolete cans and buckets, which he completes with plants from Portugal's forests.

Adrián Balseca (Quito, Ecuador, 1989), is a multidisciplinary artist based in Ecuador. His artistic practice is anchored in a strong sense of narrative, focusing on themes such as industry and mass production, economy, power and Nature. He makes small interventions, site-specific installations, videos, documentaries, photography and sculpture, bringing to his works objects trouvées that he modifies. In 2013 it won the “Prémio Brasil - Emerging Art Price, at the Contemporary Art Center of Quito” (CAC) and, in 2014, the Paris Prize at the “12th International Cuenca Biennial: Leaving to return”. In 2019, he was nominated for “The Paulo Cunha e Silva Art Prize”.
